Charcot Foot
A serious complication of diabetic nerve damage that causes the foot to weaken, swell and change shape.
About this condition
Charcot foot develops in the neuropathic foot of diabetes: because feeling is lost, unrecognised injury triggers inflammation that weakens the bones. The foot swells, warms and can progressively deform, and without treatment this can lead to ulceration and major disability.

Common signs & symptoms
- Sudden swelling and warmth of one foot
- Redness with no obvious injury
- Progressive change in foot shape
- No significant pain despite the swelling
